The pattern is worked in the round, adding a layer of shell style stitches followed by a row which forms each star's point. Inspiration for the pattern came from the use of the nine pointed star in the Bahá'í Faith.
Stitches Used and Abbreviations
- chain (ch)
- single crochet (sc)
- half double crochet (hdc)
- double crochet (dc)
- slip stitch (slp st)
Pattern Materials
- sock weight yarn
- crochet hook 3.25mm (size D), or size needed to obtain gauge
Gauge
One star crocheted with 3.25 (D hook) and sock weight yarn is approximately 3.25 inches. The D hook may seem too small at first, but using a larger hook may make the finished product buckle instead of laying flat. Crocheting more tightly holds the star's shape better.

The Bahá'í Faith and the Number Nine
The central belief of the Bahá'í Faith is in the unity of mankind. To that extent Bahá'ís believe that all major world religions come from God, each with a different messenger. The Báb and Bahá'u'lláh are messengers of the Bahá'í Faith, just as Abraham, Moses, Buddha, Krishna, Zoroaster, Christ and Muhammad were messengers of God in their time. As Bahá'u'lláh is the last of nine messengers of God, who brings the ultimate message of religious unity, the number nine refers to this special lineage and symbolizes the concept of unity.
