Learning to crochet makes a great family activity over the holiday break. The pattern only requires one skein of yarn, which costs on average four to five dollars at a local craft store. Additionally, these coasters make great gifts for co-workers and stocking stuffers for family and friends.
Crochet is appropriate to teach to older children. Once you get the hang of the pattern it becomes a relaxing activity to do while watching TV or digesting a holiday meal. Plus you gain the satisfaction of making something yourself or giving a handmade gift. Enjoy!
Supplies
1 ball Lion Brand Wool Ease Yarn White/Multi
1 size G crochet hook (4.5mm)
Notes: Any worsted weight sparkly white yarn may be substituted for the pattern. Wool Ease is convenient because it is machine washable and is available at most chain craft stores. Each coaster uses approximately 12.4 yards (11.3 meters), so one skein of White/Multi (162 yards) will make 13 coasters, or two sets of six coasters.
Gauge
One finished coaster measures 4.25 inches across. If your coaster is too small, try going up a size crochet hook to H/8 (5mm) or I/9 (5.5mm). If your coaster is too large, try a smaller hook.
Stitches Used
chain stitch (ch)
slip stitch

Variations
Use a different colored yarn to make these coasters suitable for other seasons. A light green or dusty brown would fit spring or autumn.
Chain several stitches from the last slip stitch to create a loop, then join (slip stitch) into the first chain stitch in the loop. You have created an ornament or seasonal decoration. Hang the decoration from a Christmas tree, door knob or hook on a window sill.
